How to Photograph Handmade Jewelry With Window Light

Jewelry & Accessories · Photography & filming

Small jewelry needs photographs that explain more than sparkle. A useful set shows the overall design, the surface, the fastening and a sense of scale. Plan those views before adding decorative props.

Start with a simple arrangement

Choose one piece or a clearly matched set. Wipe the surface gently with a material-appropriate cloth and check for dust, fingerprints and stray fibers. Place it on a plain background that separates it from the metal or stones. Keep a second piece nearby only if it helps explain how the set looks together.

Move the jewelry before buying more lights

Work near a window, outside a direct sunbeam. Rotate the piece and watch the reflections change. A shiny object reflects its surroundings, so bright patches may come from the window, a phone case or your clothing. White card can provide a softer-looking reflection. Stop when the shape and finish read clearly rather than trying to remove every reflection.

Build a useful sequence of views

Take an overall image, a close detail and a view of the clasp, post or back. Add scale using a hand, a ruler in a supporting photograph or accurate measurements in the listing. Do not rely on a large decorative prop as the only scale reference. If you show jewelry worn, keep the pose comfortable and the piece unobstructed.

Keep editing restrained

Straighten the image, crop away distractions and adjust brightness if needed. Check that metal and stone colors still look believable. Avoid smoothing away handmade surface details or making a stone look more saturated than it is. Keep the same background and general light across the set so the buyer can compare views easily.
